Palmer Lake Newborn Photos

Baby Braylen is the sweetest little girl! She came into my Palmer Lake newborn studio and was such a joy to photograph. We had lots of fun playing with different headbands, blankets, wraps, and stuffies. And we got lots of sweet family portraits with mom and dad. It brings me so much joy to be the photographer who gets to take someone’s first portraits as a family! I love these newborn girl photos!

The way newborn session work in my studio is that we usually break up the session into three different “sections.” It’s similar to the way a wedding day is broken up into getting ready photos, ceremony, portraits, reception, etc. My newborn sessions are two to three hours long depending on how the baby is doing. If they sleep well right away, we can breeze through each section of their photo shoot, but if they are being fussy, we will rearrange some things to make them comfortable even if it takes a bit longer. Newborn sessions usually take place in my studio in Palmer Lake. This makes it easier to adapt and change things as we go.

The “sections” of a newborn photo session are the blanket poses on a beanbag, the basket and prop poses, and the parent and family portraits.  Depending on how the baby comes to me depends on which one we start with.  Ideally, we start with the blanket poses first but if they aren’t sleepy, then we start with photos of mom and dad with their new baby. Being in mommy and daddy’s arms are great if they are awake with eye contact and usually helps newborns fall asleep, so if they come to the studio awake, we’ll start here.

We also start with the family photos if there’s a sibling. Siblings are usually young kids who have short attention spans, so the earlier we can get photos of them, the better. By the end of a long newborn session, they are usually worn out and want nothing to do with photos.  So many times dad goes home right after the photos with the older siblings and mom stays with the baby while I photograph them and maybe they will both get a nap in 🙂  lol   I am always working with the baby and family to make sure they are calm, happy, and sleepy! This method of breaking up the session into different parts helps the baby fall asleep and stay asleep. Plus, it gives mom and dad a chance to rest!
