You’ve probably heard of destination wedding photographers. They’re all the rage right now because sometimes it is better to take your photographer with you (for many reasons). But, what you might not have seen before, is a destination newborn photographer! Well last month, I took a big leap and became just that! I did my first destination newborn session in Hawaii and it was a dream come true!
I photographed Baby Cora’s older sister, Maddie, as a newborn and 6-month-old, back in Colorado. Colorado is a popular destination location itself so I see some of my favorite clients leave sometimes to go back home and in this case both of Cora and Maddie’s parents are in the military and they move around a lot. Before we were able to do her 1-year session, they had to move to Oahu, Hawaii. Not a bad place to be stationed, right!? When I found out they had baby #2 on the way (another girl!) I offered to fly out for her newborn session. It turns out, it’s actually very difficult to find great posed studio newborn photographers on the islands, so they were super excited to have me come to them.
As a Colorado-based wedding and portrait photographer, I love traveling for work. Unlike a lot of photographers, I will travel for any session, not just full weddings. From couples to families, even to studio newborn sessions, I can come to you, lighting equipment and all! (You should have seen me try to set my equipment up in their house!) This can be really important for parents who live in places that just don’t have great newborn photography options. It’s not easy to travel with a brand new baby so having a photographer who can travel to you might be the best option. And when I’m being called out to beautiful, tropical places like Hawaii, I’m certainly not complaining! Who knows, maybe I’ll make it a business to travel once a month to islands for sessions. 🙂 That would certainly be a dream come true! I’ve actually always dreamed of doing this in the Caribbean, but after Cora’s amazing session, I’ve really fallen in love with Oahu.
