I photographed Baby Emma in her home, but I brought my newborn photography set up to make it look just like my photo studio. For Colorado Springs in home newborn photography, finding and preparing the right spots in your home is so helpful and makes the session flow more smoothly. There’s a bit of an art to finding the best areas in your home to use for newborn portraits, as well as how to prepare your home. Don’t worry though! It’s a lot less work than you think.
The most common rooms I use for in-home portraits are the nursery, living room, and master bedroom. The main thing I’m looking for is good natural light. Good natural light means you can use the room during the day, without any lights on. The light doesn’t have to be streaming right into the room. You just need enough windows to keep the room bright during the day.

For family portraits, we want a neutral colored wall that is big enough for a group. A 6 foot wide stretch of wall with no furniture on it is ideal. If there is art on the wall, we can remove it and hang it again after we are done. A wall with paint, rather than wallpaper is best because patterns can be distracting in photos.
You do not have to clean your whole house before I come! Seriously, do not bother. You have enough on your plate with a brand new baby. I’m going to bring so much camera gear and props and rearrange furniture anyway. I will of course put everything back the way it was too! Another thing to keep in mind, is that during the posed newborn photos, we want to minimize distractions and noise. It’s great to have another room to put pets and siblings in so that the baby can sleeps and not be bothered while we take photos.
