One of the most frequent questions I get asked by my clients is what to wear for their portrait session. For most every session, whether it is maternity, family, engagement, etc, there are some across the board things to consider with just a few adjustments and differences depending on the session. So, to help you with your wardrobe dilemma, take these things into consideration when preparing for your session.
What to wear for your photo session
Be comfortable and dress to match the location. Regardless of what type of session, you don’t want to wear something so tight you can’t breathe or feel itchy or feel too big that you fidget with it etc. In addition, you most likely don’t want to wear high heels to get photos taken at a rural location with cactus, rocks and a hike. There are some exceptions to this if you want really dramatic, fancy photos on top of a spectacular view. For these you’ll want to bring some “travel” shoes and clothes to get to the location.
Dress for the season. Wear layers, long sleeves, scarves and NICE coats and shoes for fall and winter photos and then more spring time attire for the warmer, greener months.
No logos, graphic tees, distracting patterns, etc. These tend to take away from the subject (YOU!) and eyes go directly to words or logos when visible so it’s just easier to leave them out all together.
Coordinate colors! I generally like to tell my couples to not match, but coordinate outfits to a similar color palette and feel free to incorporate pops of color. So generally this means, if he’s wearing brown or beige, then maybe you should wear coral, cream or red. If he wants grey or dark green, maybe you wear light blue, lavender, etc.
Feel free to incorporate textures or accessories. I LOVE when clients include fabrics with texture like lace or tulle or accessories like vests, scarves, jewelry. Still make the outfit your own!. Be You by all means!
