Milestone sessions have come a long way in commemorating the first year of life for your baby. In fact, in a blink of an eye they go from sleepy, adorable newborns to 1 year old milestone cake smashes. Moreover, these sessions are fleeting as they can only be documented in a few weeks. Indeed, there are so many things to do when you are expecting. One thing parents understandably forget is scheduling professional newborn photos. Many assume they can book a session once the baby is here. However, this usually isn’t a good option to bet on. If you are wanting any specific props or specific style, the materials or photographer may not be available in that short 2 week period. Most newborn photographers can only take 1 session a day. In fact, sessions are usually 2-3 hours and move at the baby’s pace and keeping baby safe.

One year cake smash sessions are a lot of work. There are special (practically worn one time) hand made outfits, crafted cakes, themed props and magical backdrops. Even if you are having a themed birthday party, that is a lot to gather, setup and keep to use for photos. Which is why hiring a studio photographer for your 1 year old’s cake smash session is a smart move. This is like planning 2 one year old parties and with a kid that is more mobile than than your phone.
Lastly, most parents don’t realize that babies react very differently to one year sessions depending on the setup and the kiddo. Some babies don’t like the attention. Some just want to practice a new skill of picking up items and squeezing them or trying to stand up or walk. A few of them hate the textures of tulle on the clothing or icing. In addition, if they are mobile, good luck getting them to hold still even with the cake bait. It can be very overwhelming, for everyone, honestly. Regardless though, enjoy them this little and this milestone while it lasts.
